Are you drawn to fluffy hotel-like options, or do you prefer something in between? Perhaps you're looking to channel your inner Tony Soprano, "The Dude" from The Big Lebowski or you have a Brad Pitt in Fight Club vibe in mind. Or maybe you're shopping for a bathrobe as a gift for someone else and aren't sure where to start.

In any case, you'll find the best robes for men here. Keep reading for buying tips and insights into standout materials, colors and cuts.

Best Robes for Any Style or Season

Whether you’re looking for the perfect robe to treat yourself or you’re searching for a luxurious bathrobe as a gift, these are the best bathrobes for every style and season.

1. Best Lightweight Robe: Linen Robe

From traveling to the beach for a long weekend to lounging during summer afternoons at home, a linen robe will keep you cool and comfy.

Thanks to its increasingly soft feel and unbeatable strength, linen is a fan-favorite bedding textile. But sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers aren't the only way to enjoy this casually luxurious, endlessly versatile material.

You can bet some of the best robes for men are made of linen. Made from the exceptionally long and sturdy fibers of European flax plants (also known as linseed or Linum usitatissimum), the fabric is lightweight yet durable with a breathable, billowy quality.

Why Is European Flax Linen the Best in the World? Read our blog to find out.

Why Men Love This Linen Bathrobe

This Linen Robe is woven from 100% European flax fibers, then garment washed to ensure an ultra-soft, lived-in feel the very first time you wear it. The tear-resistant fabric is a little heavier than your typical linen bedding to offer a nice drapey feeling without sacrificing its inherent airiness.

Going down to the ankles or shins, depending on the wearer's height, this is one of the best robes for men who like a longer cut. Not only that, but the relaxed fit slips effortlessly over loungewear, boxers or pajamas.

2. Best Luxury Bathrobe: Classic Turkish Cotton Robe

Plush and roomy in all the right places, the Classic Turkish Cotton Robe is warm enough for winter mornings and will instantly remind you of a day at a luxurious spa. Turkish cotton is wonderfully absorbent, so you can put it on right out of the shower.

For guys who prefer fluffy terry cloth, a Turkish cotton towel robe is the way to go. The textile is loomed from extra-long plant fibers, making it not only durable and strong but also softer than everyday cotton. And while it's notably thick and plush, the material isn't as heavy as it appears.

Do you see yourself reaching for your bathrobe when you step out of the shower or hot tub? Or maybe you want something to wear while sweating it out in the sauna or steam room. If you plan to use your robe as an alternative to a bath towel, absorbent Turkish cotton might be your best bet.

What is Turkish Cotton?

Turkish cotton is a fabric made from long-staple cotton fibers grown in Turkey. Longer fibers improve the fabric’s softness and strength compared to other types of cotton. Turkish cotton is a popular material for bathrobes and towels, because of its superior plushness and absorbent properties.

Garments and textiles made of Turkish cotton have been admired and celebrated since the days of the Ottoman Empire. With such a long-lasting history of luxury, it’s no wonder Turkish cotton is one of the best and most comfortable fabrics to wear near your skin.

5. Best Absorbent Bathrobe: Waffle Robe

Also called honeycomb fabric, the weaving technique used creates a three-dimensional appearance made up of recessed squares, offering balanced softness and structure.

Choosing Bathrobe Sizes For Men

Selecting the right size is essential, whether you're shopping for yourself or have someone else in mind.

One of the most important factors when selecting the right size and style of bathrobe is first asking, why do men wear bathrobes?

Some guys like to wear robes over PJs, joggers, t-shirts and other garments. At those times, a bathrobe or robe is just a comfy outer layer to provide extra coverage and warmth, so, a slightly looser cut is best. On the other hand, when you rock your robe with just boxers, swim trunks or potentially nothing underneath, you might prefer a more fitted design made with an absorbent material that wicks water away from the skin.

How Should a Men's Bathrobe Fit?

If you’ve always worn your bathrobe with a little room to spare, you may be wondering, should a bathrobe be oversized?

Ideally, a men's bathrobe should drape somewhat loosely over his body. That way, it'll be comfortable enough to move around in and have plenty of slack so as not to feel tight or stuffy when worn over a full loungewear outfit.

With this in mind, the best robes for men have relatively relaxed silhouettes and adjustable ties around the waist. This allows the wearer to go up or down in size and wear different things underneath without fretting over whether it'll continue to fit. On the other hand, you'll want to avoid an overly baggy fit. The robe should drape over your body without looking like you're drowning in excess fabric.

What Is the Difference Between Bathrobes and Regular Robes?

The difference between bathrobes and regular robes usually comes down to function. Bathrobes are worn straight out of the shower or bath, so they’re made of more absorbent materials. Traditional robes, also called house coats or dressing gowns, are worn as an outer layer with pajamas or loungewear.

Since you’ll typically wear a bathrobe directly against your skin, you don’t have to worry about selecting an oversized robe to accommodate layers unless you prefer a little extra room. Many people prefer to purchase a slightly oversized regular robe to make it more comfortable for layering with sweats, pj’s or lounge attire.

How to Choose the Right Unisex Size

Modern unisex robes are often available in sizes ranging from extra-small (XS) to extra-large (XL). There are some exceptions, but since they're designed to fit both men and women, the larger sizes typically fit most adult men, and the smaller ones will fit most adult women.

Ordering the size you'd normally wear in a men's t-shirt, unisex tee or pajama pants is usually a safe bet. But when in doubt, look at the brand's size guide for precise measurements.

What Robe Length Is Best for Men?

Length is another critical consideration when buying men's bathrobes. Some styles reach the knees or slightly below, while others go all the way down to the ankles. Length is mostly a matter of personal preference. However, long robes for men that fall to the shins or ankles will offer a bit more warmth and coverage.

How to Wear a Bathrobe

To wear a wrap-around robes with waist ties:

  1. With the opening of the bathrobe in the front, start by slipping your arms into the sleeves.

  2. Adjust the shoulders so the robe is draped evenly on either side.

  3. Pull one side of the robe in toward your body, wrapping it around your waist.

  4. Then pull the other side in toward your body, wrapping it securely around your waist.

  5. Holding the ends of the outer sash in either hand, tie them together into a bow or knot.

If your bathrobe has interior ribbon ties, tie them into a bow to help it stay in place, even when the outer sash is untied. If yours doesn't have inner ties, you might have to use one elbow to hold it down while tying the outer sash.

To keep your robe from coming undone and accidentally exposing yourself, try weaving the sash only through the front two loops (as opposed to all the way around the back). That way, you'll have more slack in the front and can create a tighter bow or double-knot.

Bathrobes for Men: Selecting Color

The best robes for men are not only comfortable but also cool and dapper. Though the material and cut are definitely part of the equation, color shouldn't be overlooked.

The most versatile, masculine hues include off-black, charcoal, grey, taupe, off-white, dark blue and surplus green. Some guys might want to make a statement with colors like ochre, burgundy, olive, clay, terra cotta or a design-forward print. Then there's white, which has an undeniably hotel-like aesthetic.

Planning to hang your robe in your bathroom? You might consider getting a robe in the same color or texture as your other bath linens to create a streamlined look. If your robe will live in your bedroom or closet, look for a design that aligns with the decor in there.

Alternatively, you could pick a complementing hue. This means the colors don't match exactly and don't necessarily contrast but rather enhance one another.
