When Julia Hu first purchased her home, a new-build in San Diego, she saw not only a clean slate, but an opportunity to redefine her and her partner’s design style. No better time like the present. Perhaps easier said than done when planning for a little one on the way. While creating a comfortable and personal space to unwind and eventually entertain once again, they also seamlessly added a nursery to their already calm and soothing environment.
Where do you live and what do you love about your city?
San Diego, CA. I love the weather -- it’s sunny year round -- and I love the food & attractions, the beaches nearby. I’m lucky to be living in a vacation spot.
How would you describe your design style?
Modern luxe and clean combined with hints of organic wood elements. I love mixing different styles that work well together! In the end it feels modern, bright and welcoming.
What has been the biggest design challenge in your home?
Starting with a clean slate -- we had no furniture or any experience furnishing an empty house so definitely was challenging initially trying to figure out our style preferences and tying everything together.
What does your home provide?
A place of security and comfort and love. A place where we continue to make memories and entertain (though we hope to entertain more after the pandemic!)
What room captures the most about your personality?
Definitely our home theater space. It’s fun with large beanbags, a popcorn machine and a snack concession stand. We also hung up our favorite movie posters on the wall.
What do you love about your nursery?
First time parents so it’s just super special putting everything together. I love how its still neutral and matches our home style but it’s personalized for the little one
How did you want your nursery to make you feel? What personal touches did you add?
I wanted to make sure it’s still a peaceful calming space but definitely wanted to add personal touches as well. We painted an accent wall a sage green color and love the white/light wood furnishing. We also plan to add wood signage above the crib with his name.
How do you make your bedroom ready for bedtime?
We make our bed every morning so when we go to sleep everything is always clean and peaceful. We also make sure to dim lights and turn on soothing music to wind down!
How does Parachute Home enhance your home, your life?
It feels great being able to go to sleep and feel refreshed waking up the next day. I also just love how calming and clean our bed looks with it.
What is the best decorating advice that you have ever gotten or can give out?
It’s always a learning process and your style may change more frequently than you think! Invest in timeless pieces that you love but also keep an open mind when it comes to decor pieces that you may want to swap out.
