More doesn’t always mean better, especially when creating a refined bedroom. But what differentiates a space that’s minimalist from a space that’s simply lacking stuff? The design details.

We asked our friends at Havenly to guide us on the art of minimalism. We share a mutual belief that decor should be fun, easy and affordable. Havenly can decorate any room, all online, for $199 – and their business is available to anyone, anywhere. Let’s get started!

Invest in Basics

When you’re designing your bedroom, it’s all about quality over quantity. This approach allows you to splurge on the pieces that count. In a bedroom, the building blocks worth spending more on include a great mattress and dreamy linens. They suggest something versatile like our Percale Venice Set in white.

Embrace White Space

To make your room feel light and open, focus on a neutral color palette: White, ivory or beige. Purchase furniture with clean lines and choose white or a natural, stained wood finish.  Most importantly, don’t be afraid of white walls or open spaces — serenity is a good thing in the bedroom.

Decorate with Nature

Pass on tchotchkes and overpriced accents and opt for a bouquet of white blooms, succulents in a clear vase or a cluster of branches from a hike. It’s inexpensive and incorporates the calming effects of nature to your space.

Play with Texture

Add visual interest to your neutral color palette by layering in texture. Toss a cashmere throw or velvety pillow onto your bed, use jute baskets for storage or display hammered metal accents, such as bowls or vases, to make the space simple yet stylish.

Emphasize Light

Big windows, a show-stopping chandelier or a contemporary metal floor lamp...whatever your style, great lighting helps pull everything together. Don’t skimp on the bulbs! Opt for vintage-inspired designs – like Edison bulbs – or other filament styles.
