Meet Jake Arnold, Los Angeles based interior designer and co-founder of The Expert. He's designed some of our favorite celebrity's homes, and we count him as one of our dream designers to work with – we both take inspiration from the laid-back California aesthetic, after all. Jake Arnold for Parachute is his first-ever product collaboration, bringing Jake’s sought after design expertise to a unique assortment of home goods.

We caught up with Jake to chat about the collection, his current business ventures, how he approaches design, and more.

This is your first-ever product collaboration, and we’re so thrilled to work with you! Why did you pick Parachute as a partner for this moment in your career?

When Parachute approached me to collaborate, I felt there was great synergy between our two brands. My aim is to create spaces that feel impactful yet livable, and Parachute’s collection does both. Our goal was to create a collection that felt designer-informed yet approachable and timeless, and our aligned sensibilities with bedding made me really excited to dive into products together.

Tell us a bit about the design process, how is creating individual pieces different from your typical whole-home design project?

When designing an entire house you have to think of the big picture at all times. There are so many pieces in designing a home and because of that, sometimes bedding can be an afterthought. With this collaboration it was fun to get into the details and put bedding at the forefront. We were able to make impactful decisions that are just tailored to a few products rather than thinking holistically about every room in a home. We love that the collection is essentially a fully styled bedroom set. How did you come to the decision to coordinate all of the pieces in this way?

The key to the line is that everything is able to work effortlessly together so you can mix and match. We played with scale to create pieces that felt more custom and previously unavailable in the larger marketplace. The introduction of velvet and boucle are a great addition to Parachute’s beautiful linen textiles, and we were able to create a neutral yet textured color palette with a twist as a result.

The bold color palette and variety of textures is striking. You’ve said “brown is the new neutral” – can you elaborate on this emerging design trend?

It is! I have always loved browns as a way to mix in warmer tones rather than cooler grays. Brown to me is a neutral color like cream or oatmeal. It has the earthiness that consumers have been gravitating towards and is a perfect compliment to other colorways if you want to infuse more color into your space. I love to pair it with colors like sage, dusty blues, blush, and merlot.

How do you style these pieces in your own home, or clients’ homes?

As I said, what I love about this collection is that it's dynamic. You can use the full bedding set and style it as is or mix in elements with pieces that you already own. Depending on the space, whether it's for a client or myself, I would probably do a combination of the two. I also love the decorative pillows as they are a perfect addition to any bed and really give that designer touch. The boucle throw is versatile and can work in so many styles of homes. It has the best texture both for comfort and adding interesting materiality to a space.

Your company, The Expert, has been making waves recently! Tell us more about The Expert and making home design services more accessible.

I am so proud of the work that we have been doing with the platform. Design is everywhere these days because of platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. People are very much in the know about design trends, designers, even specific fabrics – more so than I ever realized! What I love about The Expert is that we are servicing so many clients, but in the way that it makes sense for both us as designers and them as clients. There are people that can afford to design their own space, but don’t necessarily need a full-service designer to execute the work and this platform gives us the opportunity to connect with so many people no matter the scale of the project or the budget we are working within.

What is your favorite piece from the collection?

I love the printed bolster pillow. I was finding it so hard to find versatile prints available within the wider market, and wanted to develop a print that reflects the Jake Arnold design sensibility. It's a piece that I think not only adds to the rest of our collection, but to Parachute’s other products as well. A print with a neutral base goes a long way in making a space feel thoughtfully designed and high impact.
